01 · What is this?

What is Total Value Locked, and how does it differ from what people typically think of as 'user count'?

Total Value Locked (TVL) refers to the total dollar value, at a given moment, of all assets deposited in a DeFi protocol's smart contracts, converted at current market prices. For example, in a lending protocol, all the ETH, USDC, and other assets deposited by users, summed and converted to dollars, is that protocol's TVL. This figure typically updates in real time, since asset prices themselves fluctuate — even with zero deposit or withdrawal activity, TVL will still move up and down with market prices.

The key difference from 'user count' is that TVL reflects the scale of capital, not the scale of people. A protocol might have just a handful of large depositors putting in massive sums, propping up a high TVL figure, which doesn't mean it has a broad user base; conversely, a protocol with a large number of small depositors might show a relatively modest TVL number. Looking at TVL alone can easily lead to a misjudgment of a protocol's actual usage.

02 · Why does it exist?

Why did the TVL metric emerge, and what problem does it solve?

In DeFi's early days, there was no unified, easily comparable scale metric across protocols. Traditional finance can cross-evaluate a company using market cap, revenue, user count, and other metrics, but most DeFi protocols have no stock and no traditional financial statements — TVL therefore emerged organically from the community as a simple metric to quickly compare 'how much capital people are willing to put into' different protocols.

For users, TVL also plays something of a social proof role: a protocol whose TVL has remained high and stable over a long period usually indicates a substantial amount of capital has withstood the test of time and stayed put — in a DeFi world lacking traditional credit rating agencies, this becomes one of the indirect ways users gauge whether a protocol is relatively trustworthy.

03 · How does it affect your decisions?

How is TVL actually calculated, and are there any disputed aspects of the calculation?

The most basic calculation multiplies the quantity of each asset type held across a protocol's smart contracts by its current market price, then sums the total. In practice, though, there are several common points of dispute and calculation differences:

  1. Double-counting: if capital A is deposited into protocol X to earn interest, then wrapped into a receipt token and deposited into protocol Y for a second layer of yield (an operation called 'TVL stacking'), some tracking sites count protocol X's and Y's TVL separately and sum them, causing the same capital to be counted twice, inflating the overall ecosystem TVL figure
  2. Different accounting scopes: some tracking platforms count only assets in a protocol's own contracts, while others also include bridged or wrapped assets — the same protocol can show noticeably different TVL figures across different data platforms
  3. Token price timing: during periods of sharp market volatility, different data sources update prices at different frequencies, so querying at the same moment might show slightly inconsistent TVL figures

So when comparing TVL across different protocols, it's best to confirm the figures come from the same tracking platform using the same accounting scope for the comparison to be meaningful.

04 · What should you do?

What's the practical impact of TVL on everyday users, and how should this metric be used correctly?

For users, TVL is one reference point for judging whether a protocol is trustworthy, but it shouldn't be the sole basis. A more practical approach is to look at it alongside other metrics: whether TVL has grown steadily over time, or was pumped up by short-term 'hot money' chasing high rewards (which tends to flow out quickly once rewards stop); whether a protocol's actual trading or lending activity level reasonably matches its TVL scale (a very high TVL paired with very low actual usage might indicate funds are just parked passively rather than genuinely being used); and whether TVL is concentrated in a handful of large wallets or spread across a broad base of users.

Worth noting: a high TVL doesn't mean a protocol is free of security risk — in fact, protocols with higher TVL tend to be prioritized targets for hackers and attackers, precisely because the potential payoff is larger. When evaluating a protocol, TVL should be treated as a reference for 'how large this protocol is,' not a guarantee of 'how safe this protocol is.'

Before the Terra/LUNA ecosystem collapsed in 2022, its flagship lending protocol Anchor Protocol had a TVL exceeding $14 billion at its peak, largely driven by the protocol offering a subsidized annual yield near 20% to attract capital inflows. Once the sustainability of this subsidized yield came into question, capital rapidly fled within a short period, and TVL collapsed to nearly zero within weeks — a textbook example of TVL being propped up by 'hot money' rather than genuine usage demand.
