01 · What is this?

What is a real-world asset, and how does it differ from the stablecoin covered in an earlier article?

A real-world asset (commonly abbreviated RWA) refers to an asset originally existing within the traditional financial system with legal ownership and cash flow (such as a U.S. government bond, a company's stock, real estate, or a business loan), brought via a tokenization technical process into a form where its ownership or income right can be represented and traded as a token on a blockchain. This process usually requires a legal structure as a bridge — the physical asset itself still stays held within the traditional financial system (say, a government bond remains held by a qualified custodian), while the on-chain token represents an ownership claim or income-distribution right on this asset, letting an originally less liquid, higher-trading-barrier asset be traded and held in fractional pieces more easily through blockchain infrastructure, or further deployed within DeFi protocols.

The key difference from the stablecoin covered in an earlier article lies in 'the asset's nature' and 'the source of value': a stablecoin is essentially a tokenized substitute for fiat currency or a crypto asset, pursuing price stability, with its value source being the 1:1 or over-collateralized reserve asset backing it; RWA's scope is far broader than a stablecoin's — it could be a stock that fluctuates with the market, a bond with fixed income, or even real estate with no standardized pricing, with its value source being the underlying asset's own market value and cash flow, not pursuing price stability. To some extent, a stablecoin could actually be considered the earliest, most mature subset within this larger RWA category (fiat currency itself is a tokenized real-world asset).

02 · Why does it exist?

Why did real-world assets emerge, and what problems within the traditional financial system are they trying to solve?

The traditional financial system carries several structural limitations: limited trading hours (most stock and bond markets only open during specific trading sessions, entirely different from the crypto market's around-the-clock characteristic); lengthy settlement cycles (traditional securities trading's clearing and settlement often takes several days to complete, with a noticeable time gap between funds and asset actually changing hands); relatively high access barriers (many high-quality fixed-income or private credit investment opportunities have traditionally only been open to institutional investors or high-net-worth individuals, hard for an everyday investor to participate in); and the assets themselves carrying constrained liquidity (an asset type like real estate or private equity has traditionally been hard to fraction into small, conveniently tradeable pieces).

What RWA aims to solve is exactly these structural limitations: through blockchain infrastructure, letting these originally constrained assets achieve around-the-clock trading on-chain, faster settlement cycles, a lower participation barrier (theoretically anyone holding a wallet can participate, unconstrained by geographic location or identity), and more flexible asset fractionation and liquidity. For a traditional financial institution, RWA also provides a new channel for accessing on-chain native capital pools and expanding its potential investor base; for the DeFi ecosystem, RWA provides a batch of relatively stable collateral options backed by genuine cash flow, to some extent filling the structural gap where pure crypto assets' excessive volatility struggles to support a large-scale lending market.

03 · How does it affect your decisions?

How does a real-world asset actually work, and what does one asset's complete flow look like from physical form to being on-chain?

A typical RWA tokenization flow involves several steps:

  1. Establishing the asset and legal structure: an issuer first needs to establish a legal structure (usually a Special Purpose Vehicle), which actually holds the underlying asset (say, purchasing U.S. government bonds from a qualified custodian) and is responsible for ensuring the rights the on-chain token holder enjoys over this asset are legally enforceable and traceable
  2. Minting the on-chain token: once the legal structure is established, the issuer mints a corresponding number of tokens on the blockchain, each token representing partial ownership or income-distribution right over the underlying asset pool — this stage usually needs a smart contract ensuring the token supply stays synchronized with the underlying asset's scale
  3. Distribution and trading: once minted, the tokens can be distributed to investors through compliant channels — some products require identity verification (KYC) to hold, while others are designed to circulate more freely on the open market, or even directly integrate into DeFi protocols as collateral
  4. Income distribution and redemption: income the underlying asset generates (such as bond interest or real estate rent) automatically gets distributed to token holders through a smart contract; if an investor wants to redeem, the reverse process burns the held token, exchanging it for a corresponding proportion of the underlying asset or cash

Different asset categories vary widely in practical execution complexity — a highly standardized, clear-cash-flow asset like a government bond has a relatively mature tokenization flow; a non-standardized asset involving complex legal registration procedures like real estate usually has a more complex tokenization flow, more dependent on how supportive the local regulatory environment is.

04 · What should you do?

What's the practical impact of real-world assets on everyday users, and how should the risk of investing in an RWA product be assessed?

For an everyday user, RWA provides an investment channel that was previously hard to directly access — such as indirectly holding U.S. government bonds through an on-chain token, theoretically obtaining a return similar to holding a physical bond, while retaining a crypto asset's flexibility in trading hours and fractional holding. This is an attractive new option for a user wanting to find a relatively stable, genuine-yield-backed option within the DeFi ecosystem.

When assessing an RWA product's risk, a few concrete aspects worth verifying: the legal structure's enforceability — verify whether a token holder's rights over the underlying asset can genuinely be effectively asserted within the corresponding legal jurisdiction, and if the issuer collapses or a legal dispute arises, what a token holder's claim priority and protection level looks like; the underlying asset's custody transparency — verify whether the asset is genuinely held at a qualified, regulated custodian, not merely a verbal promise from the issuer; the issuer's own creditworthiness and operational soundness — this kind of product's trust foundation, to some extent, still depends on the issuer's centralized role's reputation, unlike a purely decentralized crypto asset that can entirely escape reliance on trust in a single institution; and liquidity risk — some RWA products (especially real estate and private credit types), even once tokenized, might still have limited actual secondary market trading depth, not meaning you can always sell smoothly at a reasonable price anytime. Adding these aspects together helps you more accurately judge whether an RWA product genuinely brings a traditional asset's soundness onto the chain intact, or is just repackaged with an extra layer, with actual risk still not transparent.

BUIDL, a fund BlackRock (one of the world's largest asset managers) launched in 2024, is a tokenized money market fund whose underlying assets are primarily U.S. government bonds and repurchase agreements — investors holding the token hold a claim to fund shares, entitled to the yield the underlying assets generate. In early 2026, BUIDL further integrated into the DeFi ecosystem through Uniswap, letting this regulated fund product serve as collateral in a decentralized lending protocol for the first time, considered an important milestone in traditional financial institutions and the DeFi ecosystem deeply integrating. By mid-2026, the total publicly on-chain-verifiable RWA market value (excluding stablecoins) had grown to a scale exceeding roughly $30 billion, substantially up from early 2025.
