01 · Why did this happen?

If a protocol ranks near the top by TVL, does that mean it's the most trustworthy option in its category?

Not necessarily — TVL ranking reflects 'how much capital is currently parked here,' which is influenced by many factors, including how long the protocol has been live (launching earlier usually gives more opportunity to accumulate scale), whether it's paired with an aggressive liquidity mining campaign attracting capital, and the overall capital scale of the blockchain ecosystem the protocol resides in. A protocol ranking near the top by TVL might simply be because it's existed long enough or its reward campaign is attractive enough — not necessarily equivalent to also ranking near the top in technical quality or safety.

A more complete evaluation approach treats TVL ranking as one reference indicator of 'scale,' cross-referencing it alongside the other factors discussed earlier — trading volume health, fee revenue stability, audit track record, and liquidation mechanism design. Using TVL ranking alone to judge 'trustworthiness' easily overlooks equally important quality dimensions beyond scale.

02 · What is the mechanism?

Is there a rough reasonable range for the trading volume divided by TVL ratio that can be referenced?

There's no single absolute number that applies universally, since the reasonable range varies noticeably by asset type and protocol design — a stablecoin-to-stablecoin pool, having low slippage requirements, can healthily see trading volume several times or even dozens of times its TVL; a major-asset-to-major-asset pool might see this ratio fall anywhere between one-tenth and several times TVL and still be considered normal; a newer, more obscure long-tail asset pairing might see trading volume far below TVL, which doesn't necessarily mean the pool has a problem — it might simply reflect that market demand for this asset itself isn't yet large enough.

A more practical use isn't memorizing a fixed 'reasonable range number,' but comparing similar asset types and similar protocol types side by side — for the same type of major-asset stablecoin pair, if protocol A's volume-to-TVL ratio is noticeably lower than similar type protocols B and C, that relative comparison actually holds reference value. Looking at an isolated ratio number alone, lacking a comparison baseline, easily leads to misinterpretation.

03 · How does it affect me?

The same protocol sometimes shows slightly different TVL numbers across different data platforms — which should be considered accurate?

This is a common phenomenon, mainly stemming from differences in accounting scope across platforms: some platforms only count assets in a protocol's own contracts, while others also include assets bridged in from other chains; different statistical approaches handle 'double-counting' differently (the same capital wrapped into a receipt token and deposited into another protocol for a second layer of yield) — some platforms try to subtract the double-counted portion, others simply sum it all up, inflating the number; the timeliness of price updates can also create a gap, and during sharp market volatility, the dollar value shown across different platforms can briefly diverge.

A more sound approach isn't fixating on which platform's number is 'absolutely correct,' but consistently using the same platform's numbers when comparing across protocols (ensuring the accounting scope stays consistent), while understanding that the TVL figure itself carries a degree of statistical flexibility — it's not something that needs to be treated as an absolutely precise, unquestionable number, but rather as a reference range for 'roughly how large.'

04 · What should I do?

Beyond the few indicators covered in this article, what more advanced data points might beginners want to learn to observe next?

A few directions worth further exploring later: capital concentration, observing whether a protocol's TVL is concentrated among a handful of large wallets or spread across a large user base — an overly concentrated pool means a single large holder's withdrawal could cause a severe shock to the whole protocol; governance token distribution, checking whether the governance token is overly concentrated among the team or early investors, which relates to how genuinely decentralized the protocol's governance actually is; cross-protocol dependency, understanding whether the collateral asset or price source this protocol relies on is simultaneously shared by multiple other protocols, relating to the systemic interconnection risk discussed in another article on this site; and the structure of a protocol's revenue sources, distinguishing whether fee revenue is overly dependent on a single product line or single market condition, versus having relatively diversified, multiple revenue sources.

These more advanced indicators don't need to be fully understood all at once — as you become gradually more familiar with the basic indicators, you can dig progressively deeper according to your own interest and needs. It's a step-by-step learning process, and there's no need to demand yourself become a data analysis expert right from the start.

Opening DeFiLlama or a similar protocol analytics platform for the first time, the screen full of numbers can easily leave a beginner unsure where to even start looking: TVL, trading volume, fee revenue, token price, various percentage changes. You don't need to understand every single number to start evaluating a protocol — grasping the meaning of a few core indicators is enough to build a basic framework for judging 'how big this protocol is, and whether it's worth researching further.'

Look at Total Value Locked First, But Don't Stop There

Total Value Locked (TVL) is usually the most prominent number on a dashboard, representing the total market value of assets deposited in the protocol — a quick first indicator of a protocol's scale. But looking at TVL alone can easily lead to misjudgment: a high TVL doesn't mean a protocol is safe, and it doesn't mean many people are using it — it purely reflects capital scale. A more meaningful approach is to also observe TVL's historical growth trajectory: has it grown steadily over the long term, or did it once spike from a short-term high-reward campaign before rapidly falling back? The latter, a sharply volatile trajectory, usually means the capital previously attracted was 'hot money' chasing short-term subsidies, not capital genuinely recognizing the protocol's long-term value.

Trading Volume: Is Anyone Genuinely Using This Protocol

If a protocol is an exchange type (DEX), trading volume is the key indicator for judging 'is anyone genuinely using this' — closer to real usage demand than TVL. You can divide trading volume by TVL to get a rough capital efficiency ratio — if TVL is high but volume is relatively low, it may mean capital is just parked passively here (say, to earn token rewards), not genuinely used frequently; if the ratio of volume to TVL looks healthy, it means this pool's depth is backed by genuine trading demand, and pools like this are also usually less susceptible to price impact from a single large trade.

Fee Revenue: Is the Protocol Itself Genuinely Making Money

Fee revenue represents the actual money a protocol earns by providing its service — a key indicator for assessing whether a protocol has genuine long-term self-sustaining capability. Some protocols show impressive TVL and trading volume figures but have thin fee revenue, meaning the fee rate set is extremely low, or the trading volume itself contains a large fake component driven by subsidies; steadily growing fee revenue is usually a positive signal that a protocol has established a genuine, sustainable business model. Some dashboards further break down where fee revenue gets allocated — what percentage goes to liquidity providers, what percentage goes into the protocol treasury — this allocation ratio is also worth noting, reflecting how the protocol's revenue model is designed.

Token Price and Market Cap: A Different Matter From the Protocol's Own Health

Beginners easily equate 'token price movement' directly with 'how good the protocol is,' but the two can actually decouple. Token price is influenced by broader crypto market sentiment, the token's supply emission schedule, market speculative sentiment, and other multiple factors, not fully reflecting the actual health of the protocol's underlying business. A more meaningful approach is to compare the token's market cap against the TVL and fee revenue discussed above — if the token's market cap is far higher than the protocol's actual generated fee revenue, it means to some extent the market's pricing of this token includes a large amount of optimistic expectation about future growth, not fully based on already-realized operating performance right now.

Growth Trend Matters More Than a Single Point-in-Time Number

Whether it's TVL, trading volume, or fee revenue, a screenshot of a single point-in-time number provides relatively limited information. Most dashboards let you switch to view historical trend charts over the past 7 days, 30 days, or even a year — observing these numbers' trajectory of change reflects a protocol's genuine development state far better than just looking at 'what it is right now.' Steadily growing, flat, or steadily declining — these three completely different trajectories mean entirely different things, even if the current absolute numbers look similar.

What This Means for Your Money

Next time you open a protocol's dashboard, you can follow this order to quickly build a basic impression: first look at TVL's scale and historical growth trajectory, then check whether the ratio of trading volume to TVL looks healthy, then check whether fee revenue is steady, and finally compare the token's market cap against fee revenue, while building a habit of looking at historical trends rather than just a single point-in-time snapshot. None of these steps require complex financial analysis skill, but they can help you quickly extract, within a few minutes, from a pile of seemingly complex numbers, a preliminary judgment of 'is this protocol worth spending more time researching in depth.'
