01 · What is this?

What is a voting escrow token, and how does it differ from what people typically think of as a governance token?

A voting escrow token (veToken) is an advanced variant of a governance token: a typical governance token usually works as 'however many you hold, that's how much voting power you get' — you can buy, sell, or transfer it anytime, with voting power flowing along with the token in real time; a veToken additionally requires users to deposit governance tokens into a lockup contract, during which these tokens can't be freely transferred or traded at all, in exchange for voting weight calculated based on the lockup duration — usually the longer the lockup, the greater the resulting voting power (say, a 4-year lock might yield several times the voting power of a 1-year lock). Before the lockup expires, you can either keep it locked or wait until expiration to unlock and reclaim the original tokens (but lose voting power at that point).

The key difference from a typical governance token lies in the 'cost structure of obtaining voting power': a typical governance token's voting power can be obtained instantly through short-term borrowing (like a flash loan) — this is also the technical basis making governance attacks possible; a veToken, by requiring an asset to first be locked for a meaningful stretch of time before taking effect, is inherently immune to this kind of instant-borrow-for-voting-power attack, at the cost that a user willing to participate in governance must give up the asset's liquidity during the lockup.

02 · Why does it exist?

Why did voting escrow tokens emerge, and what problem are they trying to solve?

After adopting a typical governance token model, most protocols gradually discovered two structural problems: first, a 'one token, one vote' model is easily manipulated by short-term capital — holding a token doesn't mean any long-term commitment to the protocol, and anyone obtaining enough tokens short-term (even through borrowing) can sway a vote outcome without bearing any long-term consequence; second, governance participants' interests aren't necessarily aligned with the protocol's long-term development direction — short-term holders might favor a proposal that immediately pumps the token price, even if that proposal is detrimental to the protocol's long-term health.

If you're considering participating in veToken governance, the most important thing to recognize is: once you choose to lock up, that asset can't be freely used at all during the lockup — even if another opportunity you originally wanted to seize appears in the market, or you need the funds for an emergency, you can't unlock and reclaim it early. This is a clear liquidity sacrifice, needing to be weighed against your confidence in the protocol's long-term value to judge whether it's worthwhile; also, choosing the lockup duration is an important decision — the longest term trades for the highest voting weight and possible extra revenue share, but also means the longest liquidity freeze, requiring careful assessment based on your own capital planning.

For a user who simply wants to hold the token without actively participating in governance voting, it's also worth understanding the veToken mechanism's impact on overall tokenomics — if a large amount of the token gets locked into a veToken contract, the circulating supply is relatively reduced, theoretically providing some support for the token's price, but it also means the protocol's governance power might be highly concentrated among a small number of large holders willing to lock up massive sums long-term — a different form of power concentration, a factor worth considering together when assessing how genuinely decentralized a protocol adopting a veToken mechanism actually is.
